In our last blog, we explained the damaging lifecycle of a plastic toothbrush, and the reasons that those little oil based fellas are bad for the health of our planet. In this blog, we’ll be describing the lifecycle of a Bristle bamboo toothbrush (in our opinion, the best bamboo toothbrush!), and explain why you should make the switch to our environmentally-friendly alternative.
People ask us where our toothbrushes are made. It should be no surprise that our bamboo toothbrushes are made in China – this is a conscious choice, not just for convenience, price and the fact that everything seems to be manufactured in China these days; but because China is home to some of the largest organic and sustainably managed bamboo forests in the world.
Every Bristle bamboo toothbrush starts it’s life in an FSC certified moso bamboo forest in Zhejiang Province. Moso bamboo is a fantastic eco-friendly resource: it is strong, versatile, grows incredibly quickly and can be harvested with very minimal machinery. It is also easy to grow organically, requiring little to no pesticides. For all those concerned about our fury friends, Moso bamboo is not eaten by pandas – we wouldn’t want to steal food from those guys.
Once harvested, our bamboo is driven down the road to our toothbrush factory. Our manufacturer is a toothbrush specialist – they make all kinds of toothbrushes and have been doing so for years, selling many FDA and CE approved products throughout the world. They have recently started to manufacture one of the best bamboo toothbrush on the market (the Bristle toothbrush!) – so the more Bristles sold, the greater the demand, and the less plastic brushes they will manufacture. Ethical concerns are at the forefront of every decision we make – what’s the point of a biodegradable toothbrush that’s made in a horrible sweat shop in some unknown location? Our manufacturer has been recently audited by the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI), and was found to be compliant and responsible across the board. All employees are over the age of 21, and are paid a competitive rate. All employees work 8.5 hours a day or less and are treated fairly with benefits and proper holiday/break structure. It’s a happy place to work.
Once our toothbrushes are shaped using minimal tools, and zero chemical additives, they are then given their dentist approved Bristle haircut and sent into the packing room to be sterilised and boxed. Our packaging is 100% biodegradable, simple and easily recycled. It contains zero plastic. Our brushes are then shipped out to the UK, to Bristle HQ where they are then distributed in our zero plastic envelopes via existing Royal Mail postal routes.
People have questioned the carbon penalty incurred by our delivery process – and it’s a fair comment. But when closely examined, the transportation and manufacture processes involved in the Bristle Bamboo Toothbrush Subscription Service, are far fewer than those accumulated by the standard plastic toothbrush which you may buy from your local supermarket.
After a few months, when your Bristle bamboo toothbrush is in its twilight years and you’re ready for an upgrade, we send you out a nice fresh one. No need to re-order, you’ve set your renewal date. You’ll never have to remember to buy a new toothbrush again! But what of that old knackered Bristle? Well maybe it’s got some life left in it yet and you can use it to scrub the chain on your bicycle. But if not, you can pull out the bristles with a pair of pliers to be responsibly disposed of, and then do as you wish with the handle. It’s still a quality piece of moso bamboo – find another use for it, or send it back to mother nature by popping it in the compost or garden waste.
Every Bristle toothbrush bought is one less piece of plastic contributed to global pollution – not only that but brushing with bamboo on a daily basis will remind you of your pledge to reduce your plastic footprint for good. At every turn and crossroad, the Bristle team has ensured that our environmental and ethical principles are upheld. Bristle is a socially responsible enterprise and is joining a growing army of ethically conscious companies, who will change the way the world does business forever.
