5 EASY STEPS TO REDUCE YOUR PLASTIC WASTAGE

Make a few easy changes to your daily routine: massively reduce your plastic wastage.

We started Bristle to try to reduce the obscene amount of plastic wasted as a result of our toothbrushing habits in the UK. We deal with toothbrushes, it’s what we’re good at. But we’re also into other ways to reduce plastic wastage. Here are some of our favourites:

1. BRING YOUR OWN FLASK TO STARBUCKS

“One skinny-soya-double-shot-caramel-mocha-plastic-free please”. How many cups of coffee do you buy a week? Think of all those plastic lids. One very easy lifestyle change you can make: bring a flask! Most coffee shops are more than happy to fill up your personal flask instead of a paper cup – gives you the added benefit of a hot coffee all morning too! Win win.

2. BAG FOR LIFE

The world is slowly turning it’s back on the single-use, flimsy, and let’s be honest, pretty crap supermarket plastic bag. Wonderful news for our landfills and oceans. But there is still a long way to go – so keep on refusing to use those pesky plastic bags, and stock up on some lovely bags for life instead.

3. GOODBYE BOTTLED WATER

Stop buying bottled water… or any drink in a single-use plastic bottle for that matter! The amount of plastic flung to the rubbish heap from plastic bottled water is simply not okay. Take your stand, purchase a lovely big water bottle and say goodbye to over-priced bottled water.

4. BUY IN BULK

Food packaging is growing increasingly ridiculous, not only in processed foods but with pre-prepared fruit and veg often coming vacuum-packed in plastic, with a cardboard sleeve and useless throw-away fork strapped to the side for good measure. You can even get hardboiled eggs, ready cooked and sealed within a single use fortress. Buying bulk from markets and whole food shops is a great way to reduce your packaging waste. Making food from whole produce and doing the work yourself is also a great way to keep an eye on what you eat – healthier you, healthier planet.

5. SWITCH TO A BAMBOO TOOTHBRUSH

If you were to follow dental guidelines of replacing your brush at least every 2-3 months, you’d be throwing away up to 6 plastic toothbrushes a year. Following these recommendations is important – we all like having healthy teeth. But there are over 65 million people in the UK alone – thats a staggering 390,000,000 toothbrushes thrown out every year! A toothbrush weighs around 15 grams, so a simple calculation can deduce that Britain may throw away around 5,850,000KG (over 5700 tonnes) of plastic each year – just in toothbrushes! That is bad.

Brush with a bamboo toothbrush and stop contributing to this epic environmental blunder.
