Bristle was founded by Ben and Dan in a bid to make Bamboo toothbrushes the norm in the UK. We sat down with co-founder Ben to find out what inspired Bristle.
Check out the Q&A with Ben below, and find out why the Bristle bamboo toothbrush needs to be your new environmentally-friendly alternative to brushing with plastic.
“Well, I think I speak for all of us when I say that we’re into reducing plastic pollution first and foremost. We all spend a lot of time in the mountains or messing about in the sea, and when you spend so much time in nature you become very aware of the devastating impact that we as a species can have on the planet – plastic pollution is one of the big problems we face. I was brushing my teeth one day when it dawned on me how many toothbrushes I had thrown away in my life. Multiply that by the whole worlds population and you’ve got an environmental crisis caused by dental hygeine! I started looking for an alternative, and came across the bamboo option.”
“Yes, but they’re certainly not the norm. We want to make them mainstream. Most people simply aren’t aware that there is an environmentally friendly alternative to the plastic brush, and those who do brush with bamboo often end up spending too much money. There are a lot of sub-standard bamboo toothbrushes out there.”
“The Bristle is a very good quality brush so you don’t make any sacrifices when you make the switch. We’ve kept it simple but followed dental recommendations in our design. It’s affordable and super convenient. Our subscription service means you never have to think about replacing your toothbrush again – we’ll do it for you.”
“Well, toothbrushes come in all shapes, sizes and bristle stiffnesses – but the fact is, that a toothbrush needs to have a small head so you can actually reach all your teeth. It’s also recommended that you brush with soft bristles. Lots of people end up causing damage to their gums because they use bristles which are too hard. Our toothbrush has a small head, soft bristles and our simple wave design means you get a better clean. Pretty simple.”
“Dentists recommend you switch your brush every 2-3 months. Basically, you put it in your mouth twice a day, so an old brush is a minging brush! Old damaged brushes are home to lots of bacteria and aren’t very effective at cleaning your teeth. Loads of people keep the same old brush going for months on end simply because they forget to replace it. If you sign up with Bristle you’ll get a nice new brush whenever you need it.”
“Moso bamboo is a great environmentally sustainable material – it’s strong, flexible and naturally resistant to bacteria. It requires very few pesticides, and you don’t need heavy machinery to harvest it. It also grows ridiculously fast so can be replaced and replenished very quickly when compared to trees. Bamboo is actually not a tree at all, it’s a grass!”
“No they’re not. We’ve had to stick with BPA free nylon for now. You can get bristles made from pigs hair, but we like animals and we want our brushes to be vegan. Our brushes are 99% plastic free, which is a great start. But the technology for plant-based bristles is there – we’ll be implementing it as soon as possible.”
“Prices start at £3.50 for a monthly subscription. That includes free postage and packaging. So we’ll be bringing you a biodegradable toothbrush to your house for the same price as you’d pay for a basic plastic toothbrush from the supermarket. I think it’s a no brainer!”
“We don’t mess anyone around – it’s really easy to cancel or change your subscription, so there are no worries there. Also, if you have any issues or feedback we’re always available to talk to. You can just ping us a message!”
